Размер

The photo isn’t exactly 2×2 inches after printing — most phone crops are off by a few millimetres.
The head is too small or too large in the frame.
The background is grey, blue or uneven, or the subject casts a shadow.
The photo is older than six months.
The subject wears glasses, a hat, headphones or a uniform.
The image is blurry, pixelated, or a scan of a print.
The photo was edited — background replaced, skin smoothed, a filter applied, or enhanced by AI. The State Department does not accept edited or filtered photos.

Ask someone to shoot from eye level, framing from mid-chest up — we’ll crop to 2×2.
Keep a neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed or a natural smile.
Don’t use your phone’s portrait mode, beauty mode or any filter. Shoot plain.
