Why you can't make this photo at home

IRCC refuses photos printed at home or on heavyweight paper. A Canadian passport photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio and printed professionally on plain, high-quality photographic paper. This is the biggest difference between Canada and the US: with a US passport photo you can shoot at home against a white wall, but for Canada you need a studio.

What you can do here is prepare: save the photographer brief below and take it with you, so the studio produces a photo that passes on the first attempt.

Lo que el garante escribe en el dorso de una foto

On the back of one of the two photos, two different people write two different things:

  • The photographer writes or stamps the date the photo was taken, and the name and full address of the photo studio.
  • Your guarantor writes "I certify this to be a true likeness of (your full name)", then signs their name at the bottom.

Cuándo no hace falta un garante

If you're renewing an adult passport, you don't need a guarantor. Only one of the two photos gets written on — leave the second one blank.

Qué cuenta como foto alterada en Canadá

Canada is stricter here than most countries, and the definition catches things people do every day with phone photos. IRCC lists all of the following as alterations:

  • Adjusting colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness
  • Cropping around the head and shoulders
  • Cutting your image out and pasting it onto a white background
  • Changing the background, including removing shadows
  • Reshaping facial features — eyes, nose, mouth or ears
  • Removing glare, red eye, scars or birthmarks, or changing hair colour
  • Changing the colour of your clothing

Por qué esta página no tiene recorte

Cutting a photo out and pasting it on white, or changing the background, is on IRCC's alteration list. Take an unedited photo to a studio and let the photographer produce the print.

Esta página no recorta, no edita ni sube ninguna foto. Lleva estas especificaciones a un fotógrafo comercial.
