35×45 mm is the most widely shared ID photo size outside North America. It is also the one where people most often get refused, because the millimetres match and nothing else does. The country you are applying to decides the background colour, how much of the frame your head must fill, and how recent the photo has to be.

Qué revisar antes de enviarla
For a UK online application, do not crop at all. GOV.UK states that the system crops your photo for you: "Do not crop your photo — it will be done for you." A pre-cropped photo risks being rejected as altered.
For a UK paper form, the printed photo must not be a cut-down version of a larger picture — so it has to be produced at 35×45 mm, not shrunk down to it.
Schengen countries share the 35×45 mm size but not a single authority: each consulate and visa application centre publishes its own version of the rules. Confirm on the site of the consulate or centre handling your application before you print anything.
